Allow Yourself Time to Wake Up

Wake up at a time that allows you to complete your usual morning routine. You don’t want to be scrambling around in a hurry—this will only cause unnecessary stress.

Instead, calculate how long it takes you to get ready. Then, tack on an additional thirty minutes to ensure you have enough time to get completely woken up before you walk out of the door.

Choose Your Outfit Wisely

When choosing your outfit, aim for comfort. You don’t want to be distracted during the test due to your clothes being itchy or tight.

In addition, regardless of the weather outside, it’s also smart to bring a sweater or jacket with you to the test. Again, you don’t want to be distracted because the temperature in the room is too cold. Your mind should be solely focused on completing the exam.

Eat a Nutritious Breakfast

Instead of reaching for your favorite high-sugar cereal or morning pastry, opt for something more nutritious and filling. Sugar may give you energy in the moment, but it can cause you to crash, which is not ideal for keeping you alert throughout hours of test-taking. However, foods that are high in protein provide energy that’s released throughout the day, keeping you feeling full and alert for a longer time.

Do Some Practice Questions

To get in the right frame of mind for test-taking, consider doing two to three practice questions from each section of the SAT the morning of the exam. This can serve as a “warm-up” for your brain. However, don’t try and cram—if you’re confident in your studies, there’s no need to overwhelm yourself with information you already know.


Don’t overdo it the morning of the exam! You don’t want to feel tired from fitting in extra activities like exercise, chores, or errands. Save these items for after the exam so you can go into it feeling awake and energized.

Plan to Arrive Early

Calculate how long it takes to get to your testing facility, and tack on at least 15 extra minutes to this number so you can arrive to the test early. Again, if you’re scrambling to get to the exam, you’ll only stress yourself out and feel frazzled as you begin the test, which is not the right mindset for setting yourself up for success.
